Wordless Wednesday ~ Muppet Postage Stamps

Focused on the Magic

It's another Wordless Wednesday and this time I have some pretty cool pictures to share starring the MUPPETS. These are some vintage stamps I had collected from September 2005 and it is also a tribute to their creator Jim Henson..  Enjoy and don't forget to comment...

I want to thank Debs for hosting and feel free to join the Hop @ http://www.focusedonthemagic.com/

FUN FACT about these stamps: The USPS raised postage rates to 39 cents in January 2006.. Bummer.

Pumpkin Beignets from CLUB 33 - Disneyland Park

Is your Monday dragging after losing that oh so precious hour? There's always my way. Make some fried dough and cover it with sugar.  Enjoy :-)

Pumpkin Beignets-- makes 24
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (105ยบ)
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
Maple Glaze
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
For pumpkin beignets:
  1. Sprinkle yeast over warm water in a small bowl, stirring to dissolve. Let stand for 5 minutes.
  2. Combine flour, pumpkin puree, sugar, heavy cream, hot water, egg, shortening, and salt in a large bowl; stir in yeast mixture. Mix dough just until combined and smooth. Let dough rest in bowl, covered with a clean kitchen towel, 30 minutes.
  3. Transfer dough to a well-floured surface. Pat to about 1/4-inch thickness and cut into 2-inch squares. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let dough rise in a warm, draft-free area, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  4. Heat 3 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F in a deep, heavy pot over medium-high heat. Fry beignets until golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes, turning as soon as they brown on one side.
  5. Remove with tongs or a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain.
For maple glaze:
  1. Combine butter and maple syrup in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave until butter melts. Whisk in powdered sugar until smooth.
  2. Drizzle warm beignets with maple glaze and serve immediately.
If you get the chance to make these let me know, I know I will definitely be trying them. In Italian cooking we call these fried dough or Zeppoles...

Send "Cheer" to Military Families

Just wanted to pass on some Holiday Cheer. We Thank our Military and Their Families..

Please click on the link below for more info:

Send "Cheer" to Military Families

Cheerios® and the USO are proud to team up to support military families
When duty calls, our nation's military families rise to the challenge to help support our country.  Military families, whether on bases or in their communities, often face separation, relocations, single parenting duties and economic stress.  There are more than 1.4 million active duty military members supported by more than 3.6 million family members, and 70 percent of married active duty military members have children.
So this fall, Cheerios® and the USO are partnering to send "Cheer" to military families to thank and encourage them for their commitment to our country.  Specially marked boxes of Cheerios cereal will feature "Cheer" postcards, which can be cut out and mailed to military families through a partnership with the USO.  Even more, for each postcard received, Cheerios will donate $1 to the USO to help support programs for military families.  Cheerios has already donated $150,000 and will donate up to an additional $100,000 based upon the number of postcards received by November 30, 2012.
Cheerios invites you to show your appreciation by sending a simple "thank you" using the "Cheer" postcard found on the front of specially marked boxes of Cheerios in stores through mid-November.

How Does the Program Work?
Locate a specially marked Cheerios cereal box in your grocery store.  After purchasing the box, there are just 3 easy steps!
  1. Cut out the postcard found on the front of the box.  You will see cut out lines around the "Cheer" in the Cheerios logo.
  2. On the back-side of the postcard, write a message of encouragement or a simple "thank you."
  3. Add postage, and drop the pre-addressed post card in the mail.
Once the postcards are received, the USO will distribute them to military families on bases and in USO centers.  Sending your 'thanks' is a simple, personal gesture of appreciation that will mean so much for the recipient.
About the USO
The USO is a nonprofit organization that helps lift the spirits of America's troops and their families.  For over 70 years, the USO has provided a touch of home to our troops and their families through centers at airports and military bases, top quality entertainment and innovative programs and services.  When a loved one is away serving, the USO steps in to be a second family for our military families, providing support and tools.  The donation from the "Cheer" program will help fund services and programs like the following:
USO Centers
Supporting and comforting military families throughout the world

Military families —whether on bases or in their communities—face isolation, relocations, single parenting duties and often, economic stress. At more than 160 locations, the USO steps in by offering social activities for families, navigation tools for moving to new communities, and support during difficult times such as deployment and loss of a loved one.  USO Centers adapt to the changing needs of families — in these difficult economic times, they've begun offering "no dough dinners," where military personnel and their families can get a free dinner when the paycheck runs low, no questions asked.
With You All the Way
Helping kids cope when Mom or Dad is deployed or comes home different

Imagine what it is like to be a child knowing that your parent is in harm's way, and yet trying to be a typical kid like all your friends. "With You All the Way" is one of the USO's signature family programs developed in partnership with the Trevor Romain Foundation to help children and their families prepare for deployment, stay connected during the separation, plan for reintegration and at times, cope with the wounding or loss of a military parent. "With You All the Way" reaches kids through performances at schools, DVDs and kits – all to provide them with the tools they need to live a normal life while Mom or Dad is away serving.
  United Through Reading's Military Program
Keeping families connected through the power of a simple story.

The USO joined United Through Reading® in 2006 to host the Military Program.  Using all the emotion and inflection as if they were in the same room with their children, troops visiting a host USO Center, or even stationed at a Forward Operating Base in Afghanistan, read one of many available storybooks into a video camera.  The USO mails the DVD recording and book home.  Children then watch Mom or Dad and listen to their loving voice at bedtime, naptime, or anytime.  Families back home complete the circle by sending back a touch of home – a photo of the child watching the deployed Mom or Dad reading the book.  In 2010, the USO shipped more than 70,000 books and DVDs to military families, bringing the total recordings for the past three years to more than 184,000.
OPERATION PHONE HOME®
Connecting families with their loved ones abroad

With OPERATION PHONE HOME®, the USO provides that very important personal connection that helps deployed troops reach out to their families and stay in touch. Since the program's inception, the USO has distributed more than 2.8 million prepaid international calling cards, each featuring 300 units of talk time.  In 2009, the USO launched a satellite-based connectivity network, providing a private phone network, high-speed Internet bandwidth and WIFI access points for deployed troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait. In 2010, troops made nearly 2.5 million free phone calls home using this network – an average of 200,000 free calls per month. Also thanks to this network, a number of deployed fathers in forward operating bases have gotten the chance to see the birth of their children via Skype.
For more information on the USO, visit www.USO.org.

Cheerios will have many exciting events this fall in support of "Cheer." Check back soon for more information!

Mickey Mouse Pilgrim Candy Box

Will you let Pilgrim Mickey have a spot at the table this Thanksgiving? Don't worry ... he doesn't eat much and even brought his own turkey leg!

Instructions:
  1. Use scissors or a craft knife to cut out Mickey's body and each of his arms. Do not cut along dashed lines in the body or arms -- these lines are where you will fold the paper.
  2. Take Mickey's body and make all of the folds along the dashed lines for the body and the tabs. Make each fold away from you except for Mickey's legs. For Mickey's legs, fold the top dashed line towards you and the bottom dashed line away from you. This will help Mickey sit on the edge of a table or shelf.
  3. Glue the tabs to the inside of Mickey's body. The glued tabs will create an open box on Mickey's back.
  4. Fold each of Mickey's arms in half along the dashed line and glue the two sides together. Be careful not to glue the tabs at the end of each arm together. Instead fold the tabs outward in opposite directions so it creates a base to attach the arm to Mickey's body. Glue each arm to Mickey's sides.
  5. Drop a few pieces of candy into Mickey and make a special delivery!
Disney Family.com's printable crafts are specially designed with muted colors to conserve your printer's color ink.

Instructions:
  1. Print the template on regular paper or cardstock and cut out the pieces. Make all folds along dashed lines.
  2. Using either glue or double-sided tape, close Minnie's body by securing the tabs around her torso to their corresponding pieces.
  3. Close the bottom of the candy box by securing the B tabs, followed by the C tab.
  4. Fold each of Minnie's arms in half along the dashed line so the design is two-sided. Without sticking the tabs together, secure the two sides.
  5. Butterfly the tabs on Minnie's arms and secure them to the sides of her body.
  6. Fold the top dashed lines across Minnie's skirt toward you and fold the lower dashed lines away from you -- this will help her sit in place.

Hidden Mickey's~~Celebrating Mickey Mouse's Birthday

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I traveled to Disney's Hilton Head Island in August, I found that they love to play the Hidden Mickey's Scavenger Hunt here too! I'm glad that this is something that has traveled to Hilton Head from Walt Disney World because our family loves to find them. We have the book to find the Hidden Mickey's at WDW and it always goes on vacation with us. We look everywhere for them, so it was great to find out that at a resort away from Walt Disney World would have Hidden Mickey's too. This is my tribute to Mickey Mouse's Birthday, which is today. Hope you enjoy it and learning more about The DVC Resort on Hilton Head Island..

When you arrive to check-in at Live Oak Lodge on Hilton Head, one of the things you can ask for is the Hidden Mickey check list. It has clues included for you but, don't be so quick to leave the desk there is one behind it on the wall and one below you on the reception desk. Adjacent to check in you then go into the Big Murggies Den, which is the part of the Live Oak Lodge and contains the entertainment room with a TV and games. There is a pool table, sofas, checkers and many Hidden Mickey's in here.

These are some of the Hidden Mickey we found, some were in pictures, one by the fireplace and even on the walls in the game room. There were so many things to look at in here, from the nostalgic pictures, games and things from from an old cabin in the woods.

The Mickey is right below the "L"

This is the sign behind the desk at check in, full view

This is right where you stand to check in, the desk has a great painting

Here is part of the desk with the Hidden Mickey

This is in the game room
The fireplace had a lot of details including this Hidden Mickey on the side. This is a real working fireplace which in the cooler months is a great meet and greet place. They have story time in here and the kids can come with their PJ's on.

In the game room

One part of the Game room

As you walk the grounds you will also find a ton of pictures on all of the buildings, some of them need to be looked at closely for they may have something in them. This picture is right outside check in, it plays on the Steam Boat Willie theme. Look carefully at who is driving the boat..
